Always increment the counter
The problem is, it is not our business to publish these values. What I did here is a dirty wiretap.
The pre- and post- operators are modelled after how the stack works: Assuming the stack pointer is below stack data:
* (SP --) = AX // push = store and decrement
...
AX = * (++ SP) // pop = increment and retrieve
So both placements are natural and required.
