Save view information per file
This is a patch originally written by Felix Mauch, and published on

It saves information on the view mode per file. I added some minor cleanup and a small tangentially related fix.
One 'issue' is still open at reviewboard, and I am not sure whether that got addressed in the current version of the patch.
