Here's an idea for you to consider: it could be convenient to have an additional toolbar button to navigate "One directory up". I find faster a single click near the upper-left corner than moving to the lower pane, tell the two dots from the dot and click twice. That arrow-up icon could be located between the navigation arrows.
Since we can already enter a directory by double-clicking it in the files pane, navigation would not be tied to a static directory pane, so the lower pane might be reworked to include additional tabs, if that's possible. Those could show other information views such as bigger artwork, listings of arbitrary frames from all files (a reduced excel-like view for some fields may be handy to pinpoint errors without checking out each file), additional technical info of the selected file, a selection of User Actions, the tags of the playing file, global stats (sometimes I miss "Total duration"), favorite directories... There are lots of possibilities.
Maybe some users would not like to navigate with the toolbar button or lose room in the lower pane because of the tabs, and I wonder whether the main settings could have an option "Static/Tabbed" for them. Personally, without tabs I'd just resize-hide it if there's an Up button.https://invent.kde.org/multimedia/kid3/-/issues/536kid3-cli tagformat and filenameformat do not work in bash2020-12-01T12:42:03ZLouis Cornellkid3-cli tagformat and filenameformat do not work in bashIn Chapter 4 of the handbook, it says that for kid3-cli:

When executing these commands:
```
kid3-cli -c tagformat *.mp3
kid3-cli -c filenameformat *.mp3
```
..I assume the configuration settings set from within Kid3 GUI (menu "Configure Kid3", "Files" and "Tags") are supposed to be applied, as they correctly do from within the GUI. However, when executed from bash those settings are applied neither to the tags nor to the filenames.
Executing a "direct" filename change using kid3-cli works without issue, such as:
`kid3-cli -c 'fromtag %{track}_-_%{artist}_-_%{title} 2' *.mp3`
I found no kid3-cli parameters for making changes to case or spaces directly from inside a parameter, such as {title}, so I am not sure whether to call this a bug or feature request. 4. Enter a title "Example"
5. Press the 'From: Tag 2' button
6. Title will be " Example"

I can't change the mp3 filenames according to the new downloaded tag information.
What I did:
I opend a folder with MP3 files. I checked and downloaded tag information from Discogs. I stored tag information in all tags.
Automatic File change was On or Off, I'm not sure, but file names are still the old once.
I checked the settings and turned the automatic off.
I used "Extras" Dateinamenformat anwenden" ("Tools" -> "Apply File name format") but nothing happened.
If I use "Umbenennen" from context menu I need to define the name by my own. Using variables for tags does not work here.
I'm not sure if it is a bug or if it is me as the user.
I kindly request some help and insight.
Many thanks in advance.

This could be a file issue I suppose, but the files that don't play today with Kid3 play with all other audio programs, including Music and WavePad. Is there an extension or library file that talks to system audio? Any ideas?
Well, just FYI, I discovered that an accidental semicolon in folder name stops playback... correcting the folder name makes all files play. You might want to look at why that is. My attempt was this:
kid3-cli -c "filter '%{album} equals \"\" and %f contains mp3'" -c "set album '(unknown album)'"
This sort of works but has some problems:
* Although it filters out the non-mp3 files, it doesn't do short circuit evaluation. For instance, I have a zero length (bad) .mp4 file. When it reaches this file it gives me a ReadChildAtoms error. Apparently it tries to check the album on the .mp4 file (failing to do so on the zero length file) before it checks to see if the name contains .mp3 (and changing the order to put the 'contains' first won't fix it).
* It doesn't limit itself to the current directory.
I also tried a version which used a for loop in the shell to get all the files, and passed the filename in--but I couldn't figure out the syntax to pass the filename to kid3-cli and still filter out files that don't have a blank album name.

I use 3.7.0 (repo version) on updated MX Linux 19.2.
I can edit tags on hundreds of music tracks (mainly .mp3) thanks to kid3. I changed some "genre" tag to better use in my music player : deadbeef, and mpd through moOde (raspberry pi distro). I change ID3v2.3 tag. After tag editing in kid3 I click on "save" before quitting.
However neither deadbeef nor mpd (nor vlc) seem to see any change, they display and use the same "genre" tags as before.

Unfortunately, I have been unsuccessful. Reading the handbook and help discussions I did not find an example that fit my particular tagging dilemma. I have many tracks (more than a hundred but less than as thousand) that are missing %{album}. They do have %{artist} , %{title}, most have %{genre} and a small few have the correct %{track}.
