Show error messages from debugger if configurations are not correctly set

Context: I had some trouble while trying to setup gdb locally. I ended up getting it working, but I noticed that if I had at least those messages would be easier to understand what's going on...

Please let me know if you find this useful enough to be merged. At the same time, this is the first MR in this project, so please let me know if I missed something.
