Vocabulary: Describe when to use ‘directory’ or ‘folder’

This is an initial proposal for a guideline that determines where to use the words directory or folder depending on whether the specific item is represented graphically or not.

I need feedback from the community to improve or rewrite this logic before it can be actually applied to KDE software. For example:

  • Should we use a completely different approach?

    • Should we chose folder for graphical user interface applications and directory for anything else?

    • Should we always use one of the two words?

  • Can you think of existing scenarios for which the currently proposed wording of the guideline is not clear enough?

  • Can you point to existing guidelines covering this very same wording issue, so that we can learn from them?
