Olympus Autofocus fails
No matter which algorithm, AF always fails .. without understanding how the underlying layers are supposed to work, it's a tag hard for me to really debug but I can open with this:
When running linear starting from a very close to perfect focus, it seems to move outward a bunch then back in half of that. It increments inward until the focus slopes up (out of focus). HOWEVER, when it then tries to move outward a bunch (presumably it thinks beyond the sharp focus) and back in, it never actually moves out far enough. Thus, it starts on the wrong side of the slope and focus just keeps getting worse and worse. Obviously if it moved far enough out, it would find focus again and all would be well ...
Observations:
-
I don't know how to consistently reproduce this state, but I have seen the manual "Focus In" and "Focus Out" buttons BOTH focus inward on the camera ... probably some sort of state that it gets in and can't recover from.
-
Other times, and this is quite often, if I spam the "Focus Out" button and watch the actual camera, I see that it is focusing in both directions. If I click it slowly, it works correctly. But clicking like a banshee and the focus moves in both directions on the camera.
Attached is a screen shot of the demonstration that it never actually returns to the right side of the curve, and never attains focus. The log is the directions and steps it tried to take to generate that V-Curve profile.
Please let me know what other tests I can run, or info/feedback I can provide to help diagnose this, thank you guys so much!
