Quick Previews in place of the statistics window
Instead of the statistics window we should have handy previews (of worksheets, spreadsheets, plots and variables - columns) available on mouse hovering over items in the Project Explorer and in spreadsheets.
My proposition: move the proper plots from the statistics window to plots, generate statistical measures directly in spreadsheets (enabling data re-use) and in place of the current statistics window offer configurable, simplified Quick Previews displayed on mouse hovering over variables in the Project Explorer and in spreadsheets.
The current solution with the statistics window has at least four drawbacks in comparison to the above proposition: 1) duplicity of similar solutions (the same plots in various, but similar tools or only in on of them- in the stats window, e.g. q-q plot and KDE plot), 2) no data and plots re-use (or copy&paste instead of explicit references to spreadsheet cells), 3) it gets longer to see the stats and plots in the stats window because we need to click instead of just hovering a mouse, 4) available only in a dedicated window and as long as it stays open.
From Exploratory Data Analysis and perceptual perspective, it might be even better to place the key statistics directly in the plots chosen to be displayed in the quick previews. And the detailed statistics should be generated directly in spreadsheets (for consistency reasons, data re-use, comparison of changes etc.). Without data re-use such things as "Reference line = mean(x)" or "y = median(x) + rnorm(0,1)" are not possible now.
See the enclosed mock-up of previews of variables.
