Port modification revision to non-recursive mutex

Milian Wolff requested to merge work/remove-modificationrevision-recursive-mutex into master

obviously this patch isn't fixing the place where we need the non-recursive mutex most, but it was a nice way to demonstrate what I have in mind elsewhere. what do you say @igorkushnir ?
