[DISCUSSION] Enable hardware acceleration by default?
It is not uncommon to hear users for example on Reddit complaining Falkon being slow while most users nowadays have some kind of GPU. Hardware acceleration will hugely improve scrolling/zooming because modern cubic spine OTF fonts are very slow to render compared to the old byte-code-hinted quadratic-curve TTF fonts.
We can enable hardware acceleration by just starting Falkon with
QTWEBENGINE_CHROMIUM_FLAGS='--enable-oop-rasterization --enable-gpu-rasterization --enable-native-gpu-memory-buffers --use-gl=desktop falkon
and go to chrome://gpu
and see the change (if your GPU isn't blacklisted).
I guess most Linux distros don't have this environment variable globally set and hence the complaints. But if they don't maybe we can do something here, say, wrap the Falkon binary with a shell script?
