Startup fails (black screen, frozen cursor) when running Plasma on Wayland and booting in native UEFI mode with `nomodeset`
This is an upstream report of this Fedora bug. We've observed that on Fedora 36 updated to Plasma 5.25.5, and on Fedora 37 with Plasma 5.25.5 or 5.26.1, if the system is booted with the nomodeset
kernel arg (which we use as a kind of "basic graphics mode" for use on systems where native graphics support doesn't work) and you try to run Plasma on Wayland, you get stuck at a black screen with a frozen cursor.
Plasma-on-Wayland with native graphics is fine. Plasma-on-X with nomodeset
is fine. Just Plasma-on-Wayland with nomodeset
is broken.
This does appear to be a KDE issue somehow, and kwin is my best guess for now. The bug does not happen on Fedora 36 in its original release state, with Plasma 5.24.3, but if you install Fedora 36 and then upgrade plasma*
, qt*
, kde*
, kf5*
and breeze*
- to bring the overall Plasma environment up to 5.25.5 with Qt 5.15.6 - the bug starts happening.
Journal messages from a 'good' boot - that's original F36 - and messages from a 'bad' boot - that's updated F36. The kernel was also updated, but I did that first and it did not trigger the bug. The bug only started happening after I upgraded the Plasma-related packages.
