this serves as a stepping stone to using pulseaudio-qt. instead of making one huge diff this breaks everything apart into fairly digestible pieces
once we are in sync with pulseaudio-qt we can do a minimal commit that simply removes our copies
requires the following MRs and updating of the relevant import commits
