Cleanup places runner

Alexander Lohnau requested to merge work/cleanup_kde4_legacy into master

The helper pattern and thread checks are from the <= KDE4 era and are not needed anymore.
This saves us quite a bit of code and makes it far easier to read. The functionality itself has not been changed.
