Otherwise, the applets will steal priority when they get automatically expanded (since applets only using full representations will always be set to expanded).
To test, make sure your input methods applet is hidden, and then try to click on any applet in the system tray after restarting plasmashell. After applying this patch, the first click will work fine. Without this patch, nothing will happen.
