Consistency between toolbar in kio open/save dialogs and dolphin
This is a follow-up discussion from !631 (closed). I would like to achieve more consistency between the toolbar in kio open/save dialogs and dolphin and for that make adjustments to the toolbars of the two.
Summary of my current thoughts repeats what I wrote in !631 (closed):
So where to take this from here? I think Mèven is correct, my strongest argument so far is consistency between dolphin and kio open/save dialogs. So let's analyze why there are additional actions in kio open/save:
- Up: it is shown in kio save toolbar as the URL bar is a text field, unlike in dolphin where this is not typically the case. Consequently, up is needed as the quickest way to move one folder up. Options to be more consistent:
- Change the behavior of the kio url bar to match that of dolphin
- Add up to dolphin toolbar
- Pros: consistency, provides a second way of navigating up, that is commonly known (I believe), icons-only usability should be good, as it is common in other OSes
- Cons: redundancy, looks, toolbar space lost
- show preview: it is shown in kio save toolbar as it is useful for selecting an individual file
- sort: can't see any reason why this is available in kio save but not in dolphin, it is also redundant in kio-save
- refresh: I assume (without checking) that there is some kind of bug that the dialog is not automatically refreshed in some cases and this action was added as a short/medium term remedy until that is fixed
- new folder: it is nice in kio open/save as there may be no space to right click -> add new folder
I tend to think a viable approach forward is as you suggested, one action per MR and try to achieve more consistency with that. Currently, I tend towards:
- Moving refresh into the options menu in kio open/save
- Adding sort to dolphin as it was requested by multiple people
- Adding new folder to dolphin
- Aside from that it would potentially be beneficial if kio open/save remembers preview state so you do not have to change it every time. This would maybe also allow moving it to the options menu, making things more consistent.
- Up: not yet an idea what is the best option to move forward
