Hide the status bar by default
This issue is not about removing the status bar completely without an option to get it back.
Here is the necessary migration strategy of all the functionality the status bar offers. Most of this work will be necessary before we can even consider hiding the status bar by default:
- Free space information
- Context Menu with Filelight etc. -> Moved to a new action "Free Up Disk Space" in the "Tools" main menu. (Potentially also added to the devices context menu in the places panel)
- free space bar -> removed because it is redundant as we now have that in the places panel
- free space text -> a bit sad to remove this but one can argue that one doesn't need this most of the time, you will notice when you have no space left by various error messages, and also based on the Places panel disk space bar you might also be aware that you don't have much left. When the disk space is low, we could also show the free space information as an overlay in the bottom right corner.
- Zoom slider -> zoom actions currently already appear in the hamburger menu when it is hidden. One can argue that that is good enough if we consider the basic zoom value workable in most situations. It might make sense to add an actual zoom slider to the menu though for better usability (i.e. so users don't need to open this menu repeatedly or memorise the keyboard shortcut when they want to change the zoom value by a lot).
- Status bar text
- The basic information of a folder i.e. "20 folders, 5 files (1 GB)" -> we don't need to do anything about it, it has low added value, since it sums up what is already in the view, only the size is somewhat pertinent. (However, if we were to consider it important, it could also be added to the title bar i.e. "Downloads, 20 folders, 5 files (1 GB) -- Dolphin")
- The dynamic information that appears when hovering a file or when items are selected i.e. "wallpaper.jpg (JPEG-image, 5.1 MiB)" or when items are deleted -> have it appear as an overlayed text at the bottom left of the view when needed. Picture this the exact same way as Firefox does it when you hover over a link: It tells you the url in an overlayed text in the corner of the view.
