This revert fixes the regressions

We have to revert because the Release Candidate for 22.04 will be released in four days.

If nobody stops me, I will also revert for master since there has been no work on two of the three regressions mentioned above and I don't want to be the one on the lookout that they will actually be resolved until the next release (anyone volunteering?). I'd rather see a new MR which contains both the changes being reverted here and the fixes all in one go.
