Varions maintenance work & bugfix for bad stdout text

Hi! I used to have write access to this repo, but apparently that got lost in the Gitlab migration? Anyway, these changes are minor maintenance things, like getting rid of deprecated code and adding a bugfix for the helper tool writing confusing output to stdout while pkcon is running (and thereby messing with its output).
