User autonomy documentation
Reducing dependencies on vendors to run software has potential environmental benefits. See this discussion in the KDE Eco measurement handbook.
This mailing list post provides a list of user autonomy criteria to document using the Blue Angel award criteria for desktop software as a benchmark. There are 8 primary categories to document:
- Data formats (e.g., supported data formats)
- Transparency (e.g., API, source code, license)
- Continuity of support (e.g., release schedule, security updates)
- Uninstallability (e.g., how to completely uninstall)
- Offline capability (e.g., is network connection required)
- Modularity (e.g., choice in what is installed)
- Freedom from advertising (e.g., opting out of ads)
- Documentation (e.g., data import/export, privacy policy, etc.)
Where the documentation is to be included (KDE UserBase, app-specific website, Invent depends on the information.
For example documentation, see the Blue Angel application for Okular, specifically Annexes 4-6.1
