In Plasma 6, bring back default desktop icons removed in plasma/plasma-workspace@240d0d6f
In plasma/plasma-workspace@240d0d6f the Home and Trash folders were removed due to undocumented reasons. It brings uneasy feelings for newcomers due to the following reasons I can think of:
- A newcomer/newbie doesn't know the desktop can add files and folders, thus bad feelings arise through association with the desktop environment we all know.
- The trash icon cannot be easily added to the desktop if user wants to do so. Dragging "trash" from Dolphin to the desktop will only create an inelegant shortcut without a proper translated name. Some additional steps are required.
- Most desktop environments (xfce, enlightenment, deepin, cinnamon...) add some default icons to the desktop, and users who don't like GNOME will likely also dislike empty desktop. (This needs further investigation)
For testing purpose, it will be hard to test the desktop using openQA, since if one wants to test the desktop works out of the box, a rule to match a certain region with icons is needed, so plasma/plasma-workspace@240d0d6f is reverted in openSUSE. (This can be worked around by manually creating files in the desktop folder)
Solution
Some options can be added to the containment location settings, to allow user to add some default icons easily. I can think of:
- xdg-data-dirs
- Mount Points
- Trash
- Favorite folders in Dolphin side panel
