Big styling topics we need to sort out
This issue collects big topics that span multiple groups/years/projects etc that VDG should really sort out, perhaps at a sprint. Let's use this issue to collect topics, and break out agreed-upon ones into their own separate issues so they can have their own discussions.
So feel free to edit this page to add more.
- Our HIG is kind of useless right now because it mostly describes reality, but in an inaccurate and outdated way that's not very helpful; it doesn't help you achieve a specific goal if you want to use it as a manual or a reference library. We need to rewrite it to reflect the state that we want to get to, not where we already are. But where do we want to get to? What design vision should inform it?
- Should we stick with our current approach of using single-pixel separator lines to separate content and tool areas, or should er move to either separating areas solely with different background colors, or not at all (returning to a "unibody" look from KDE's days of yore)?
- Should we give all of our buttons some kind of frame, or stick with some having frames, and some being unframed? If we do give them all a frame, can we implement some of them as conjoined/grouped buttons to reduce the visual heaviness of this?
- What animation easing curves and durations so we want for our animations? And for which kinds of animations?
- Should we do transparent background blur behind any areas of KDE app windows? Or keep this Plasma-only, and live with the inconsistency? Or remove it from Plasma?
- Where should we use the new experimental mobile settings component? Should we make it look different based on the platform? How to prevent inconsistencies, etc.
- Should we unify our concepts of virtual desktops - activities?
- Should we consider creating a list of visual features we don't want to support going forward?
- Should we attempt to create an original desktop design for the Plasma 6 series? (Meaning, re-design at some point)
- With so many options in the desktop, I think it would be good to find options that are redundant or don't have strong value and consider sunsetting them.
