Modernization of docs.kde.org - Brainstorming
I think the documentation website could be improved a lot and not just in terms of design. My two major problems with the website are that the design looks dated and the content organization. The design could be easily fixed but the content organization is hard to fix.
First thing is that the sidebar list internal categories instead of the product name. This is quite confusing for a visitor since it is the only remaining place where we advertise these names. There is also quite a lot of organization issues: e.g. kde-workspace (that should be renamed to Plasma) put the Plasma manual in a list of applications that are not all related to Plasma. Kio documentation is in the framework module and should probably more belong to a network category in Plasma. Similarly, KCM coming from some Frameworks appears in the framework category instead of Plasma.
I don't see a lot of ways to solve this issue other than manually reorganizing the content in categories. This will be more work maintaining it, but in the end, will produce a way better result than splitting the content into arbitrary categories. Here is a rough draft:
Plasma
Contains on top the Plasma Manual, then a list of the applications that are an integral part of Plasma (Discover, KSysguard, and KHelpCenter), maybe put then a section about the accessibility features and applications.
Applications
Contains the list of the base application manuals. The base needs to be defined but should include Dolphin, Elisa, Okular, and all the applications not included in any other big category.
Education
Contains all the educational applications handbooks
Games
Same with the games
Kdenlive
I guess Kdenlive should have its own section.
And a few more product-oriented categories (e.g. Calligra)
Now if we want to have some custom organization, we will need a new system to allow that and I think it would be great timing to move the small PHP frontend to a static site generator like Hugo.
